Getting around Latvia

 

You can get to Riga, the capital of Latvia, by plane, ship, train, bus, and, of course, by car.

Travelling by plane

You can get to Riga from any European city in three-hour time. Several international aircompanies fly to Riga from Oslo, Stockholm, Helsinki, Copenhagen, Moscow, Vilnius, Tallinn, Hamburg, Amsterdam, Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna, Minsk, Kiev, Warsaw, Dublin, London, Brussels, Prague, Milan and Tel-Aviv. The International Riga Airport is situated 7 km from the city centre. You can take a taxi (15 min.) or a bus N22 (25 min.) to get to the city centre from the airport. There is a tourist information centre, currency exchange, and car rental at the airport.

Travelling by ship

Direct ferry communication connects Riga with Kiel in Germany, Riga with Lubeck in Germany; Ventspils with Vestervik in Sweden; Liepaja with Rostock in Germany. Passanger port and a berth for yachts is near the city centre, on the banks of the river Daugava. One can also go to Stockholm and Helsinki via Tallinn. Travelling by train

Riga Terminal is the biggest terminal in the Baltics. The main route from Western Europe lies through Berlin, Warsaw and Vilnius. There is good communication with Moscow, St. Petersburg. Travelling by bus

There is regular bus communication with Moscow, Minsk, Kiev as well as with Amsterdam, Antverpen, Utrecht (Netherlands), Brussels (Belgium), Prague (Czech Republic), Warsaw (Poland), Potsdam, Hannover, Minster, Kiel, Munich, Bremen, Hamburg, Stutgart, Berlin, Cologne (Germany), Vienna (Austria), Paris (France). Travelling by car

If you decide to come to Latvia by car, you will need additional time for customs formalities. The road network is well-developed, though highways are not in a very good condition. You have to remember that roads are quite narrow and cross inhabited areas. Speed limit is 50 km/h – in towns, 90 km/h – outside inhabited areas. The main frontier points: Terehovo (with Russia), Ainazi (with Estonia), Valka (with Estonia), Grenctale (with Lithuania), Subate (with Lithuania), and frontier points on the highway Liepaja - Klaipeda (with Lithuania) and Eleja - Sauliai (with Lithuania).
