Travelling in the EU

After Latvia joined the EU zone, customs procedures take place only at the outer border of the EU. Nevertheless there is a certain list of goods, the importation of which is restricted even when crossing inner borders:

  • tobacco goods: 800 cigarettes, 400 cigarills, 200 cigars, 1 kg tobacco powder;
  • alcoholic drinks: 110 litres of beer, 90 litres of wine (including 60 litres of champagne), 20 litres of low alcohol, 10 litres of vodka;
  • coffee: 10 kg;
  • non-alcoholic drinks: 110 litres;
  • fuel in a jerrican: 10 litres.


    Importation of goods from the countries which are not members of the EU

    Without customs taxes one can bring to Latvia:
  • personal belongings in case of moving to the EU territory from a third country for permanent residence;
  • goods of the spouse after wedding;
  • inherited personal property in case the permanent residence of the heir is the EU;
  • household goods, necessary for temporary residence;
  • school belongings, books and household goods of a student, who enters the EU to study;
  • personal belongings of mentally and physically retarted people;
  • prizes and diplomas;
  • gifts, received in the sphere of foreign affairs;
  • fuel in a jerrican: not more than 10 litres.

    Personal belongings are not subject to customs taxes if the value of personal belongings is not higher than 175 euros. Personal belongings in this case are new things which were not used and which are meant either for personal use of the traveller or his family members or for gifts. Personal belongings are not the things which have already been used by the traveller.

    There is a certain list of goods the imprortation of which is restricted when crossing the EU border from a third country:
  • tobacco goods: 200 cigarettes, or 100 cigarills,or 50 cigars, or 250 g of tobacco powder;
  • alcoholic drinks: 1 litre containing 22% alcohol, 1 litre of vodka, or 2 litres of alhocol or aperitif on the basis of spirit or wine which contains 22% alcohol, champagne, sweet wine and 2 litres of wine;
  • 50 g of perfume and 0,25 litre of toilet water.

    Products, meant for personal use, go through a strict veterinary control at the customs.

    A person can take medicine, meant for 3-month medical treatment, if he/she shows a receipt or any other document which proves the necessity of taking the medicine (it refers to prescribed medicine).
